摘要:

Additive manufacturing activities at MSU focuses on metal AM processes which can be categorized into four distinct areas, Binder Jet Printing (BJP), Electron Beam and Laser Beam powder bed (EBPB & LBPB) and directed energy deposition (DED) in addition to hybrid manufacturing. MSU has three core faculty members in additive manufacturing, Profs. H. Chung, H. Sahasrabudhe and myself and three additional faculty members in heat transfer, Prof. J. Klausner, A. Bernard and J. Yeom. BJP is an ideal process for less oxidation prone metallic alloys such as stainless steels and nickel alloys, which can produce residual stress-free parts. New processing technique has been developed to achieve full density parts using BJP. This technique has been applied to few practical applications. However, being able to produce reactive metals such as titanium will require more advanced equipment such as EBPB and LBPB. For larger structures, EBPM is better as the processing take place at an elevated temperature and, after the completing the process, the produced part can be cooled uniformly, generating minimum residual stresses. Thus, the advantage of EBPM is being able to produce large parts but suffers from poor surface finish due to large size powders required. While LBPB can produce much better surface finish but suffers from intense residual stresses as the processing carried out nominally in room temperature. The other interest is with a hybrid system where DED and subsequent machining can take place simultaneously. This presentation will also present various efforts being made at MSU.
